I could not believe it when I saw this bronze. The
Amsterdam
School was one of the most important
European schools of design which changed the cities in
Holland with their designs for social
housing, public buildings and even furniture.
The designs are mostly in museums or private collections now. It can be seen as a cross between the
Austrian Secessionist style and the English Arts & Crafts style.
This stylised bronze monkey is mounted on an oak panel and I
think it was originally a hall way hook for keys. It is not fixed and it
could be used either as a light or as it was originally intended.
To find such a great piece of early 20th Century
Dutch design of this quality is rare indeed.
